Congress passed the FASTER ACT, and President Biden signed it into law in May 2021. The act adds sesame to the list of allergens required to be listed on food labels. In the story a local teacher and mother discusses the impact of the FASTER Act on her family. Allergist Dr. Manav Segal discusses food allergies and sesame allergy in particular.

The conversation is about spring allergy symptoms and how they differ from Covid-19 symptoms. To manage allergy symptoms and stay comfortable during the season its important to take certain measures:

  • Start medications early (ahead of symptoms)
  • Minimize pollen exposure (change clothes after coming in from outdoor activities, rinse off pollen, keep windows up when driving, and down when home)
  • Wearing a mask outdoors will actually help prevent allergy symptoms

June 9, 2020: Oral immunotherapy (OIT) offers an effective treatment for food allergies. It is not uncommon for siblings to have food allergies. Navigating multiple food allergies among siblings is especially challenging. In this case Dr. Manav Segal was able to treat both children’s food allergies: JJ’s food allergy to egg and Matt’s food allergy to peanut. Addressing food allergies is rewarding and life changing for families!

February 19, 2020: Oral immunotherapy (OIT) helped this patient overcome a debilitating food allergy to milk. Dr. Manav Segal was the first allergist in private practice to offer OIT as a treatment for food allergies in Pennsylvania. This treatment is available to treat patients with food allergies to milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, sesame seed, and other foods.

January 6, 2020: Eighty percent of children outgrow food allergies to milk, but what about the 20% who do not? Persistent milk allergy is an extremely difficult food allergy to live with. Having a food allergy to milk isolates not only the child but the family. Oral immunotherapy (OIT) is a treatment to help patients overcome food allergies!
